Sustainability

If not me, then who? If not now, then when?

I was fortunate enough to attend a sustainability learning session today and listen to some amazing speakers. One of them was Greg Foran (CEO Air NZ) and at the end of his speech he said something that really resonated with me. ‘If not me, then who? If not now, then when?’

We all know climate change is here, mother nature has released her fury all around the world, even here in little NZ. Devastating floods, record high temperatures and rising waters making beachfront properties and eventually cause some islands to non-exist.

Sure, world leaders, governments, businesses and councils have got a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, but quite frankly they are not moving quick enough.

Now, if you are like me, my instant thought around sustainability is that it isn’t affordable. I’d love to drive an EV, fly in a Hydro Jet and eat organically from my own home-grown vegetables. But how do I find the time and money to do that?

Carbon smart options as a consumer is where I can make a difference. Yes, we need carbon in our lives, but lets re-use it, instead of going into our atmosphere.

Fact: Only 9% of all plastic we have used, has been recycled.

When you are trying something new, you don’t know what good looks like. Commit to learning. Connect to opportunities around sustainable living. We may not have all the answers right now but just begin and just get started. The first step starts with you.

So join us in taking small steps now so we can make big changes for our future children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Here are my 5 simple ways to be more sustainable:

  1. Swap out body wash (plastic bottle) for a bar of soap

  2. Eat a vegetarian dinner at least once a week

  3. Recycle and compost

  4. Swap out dairy milk for oat-milk

  5. Buy household cleaning products in bulk or swap out for glass options

Are the things you are doing today good for tomorrow?
